Golf Pain Free • Longer Drives • Lower Scores • Better Game
The best way to truly improve your performance is through an efficient and healthy body.
TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) is the world’s leading educational organization dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing. The TPI screening process identifies inhibited movement patterns and corrects them through prescribed exercises, which allows the golfer to move more efficiently to optimize their golf swing.
PTSMC has a number of TPI Certified Physical Therapists trained to help you play golf pain-free and improve your game.
How TPI Works
The Titleist Performance Institute has developed a comprehensive medical screening process for golfers that is meant to evaluate swing and body mechanics to determine areas that need improvement to help avoid injury and optimize play.
Working towards a successful, consistent golf swing can be a complicated and frustrating process, especially if your swing is causing pain. There are several parts of the body that need to work together with the right motion and at the right time. Sessions with our TPI certified golf therapists can help discover the areas that may be creating problems in this process, from backswing through to impact.
“Golf fitness isn’t about looking like a bodybuilder or the best player on Tour. It’s about being fit to play the game at an individual’s highest level and doing so without causing injury. It’s about understanding how a body’s limitations can influence the golf swing and how to address those limitations through the proper channels; whether it’s through swing instruction, physical rehabilitation or strength and conditioning exercise.”

Hip Mobility
Hip mobility is essential for a solid golf swing. The hips generate power and rotation during your swing, so having flexibility and strength in these joints can significantly impact your performance. Limited hip mobility often leads to compensatory movements, which can cause undue stress on other parts of the body like the lower back.
In therapy sessions, we can work on exercises specifically designed to improve hip rotation and stabilization. Movements such as hip circles or lunges help in increasing range of motion and preparing your body for the complex movements of golf.
Don't worry if it feels challenging at first—building hip mobility is a journey, and progress will come with time and dedication.
Core Strength
Core strength is the foundation of stability and power in your golf swing. The core muscles include not just the abdominals but also the back muscles, obliques, and pelvis. They're responsible for transferring energy from your lower body to your upper body, a crucial element of a well-coordinated swing.
Therapy might involve strengthening routines like planks or Russian twists that focus on building endurance and control in the core. A robust core helps maintain balance, improve swing consistency, and ultimately, enhance your overall golf performance. Remember, consistency here is key—small, regular improvements build significant results over time.
By focusing on these critical areas, physical therapy can not only help you enhance your golf game but also safeguard you against common golf injuries. Every golfer's body is different, and tailoring exercises to your specific needs will make a huge difference. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need personalized guidance. Be patient with yourself as you progress, and remember, every little improvement brings you closer to achieving your golf goals.
